Name: Jess Oma
Role: Junior Facilitator
I stumbled into yoga when I was sweet 16, practicing classes run by my high school. Having danced (badly) as a child, I loved the opportunity to yoga gave me to consciously move my body without a sense of competition or judgment. I came to Powerliving back in the day through a bikram practice and fell in love with the studio community. After working behind the desk for a couple of years I had the opportunity to complete my 200hr teacher training with the crew when we transitioned to Powerliving and jumped at the chance!
Over the years I’ve practiced a number of physical asana including iyengar, bikram and astanga, but feel my heart truly belongs to vinyasa and yin. My classes are fluid yet strong. I’ve heard I’m called the smiling assassin! I like to build heat with an almost tidal like ebb and flow of intensity. Be prepared to sweat and then find some sweet zen.
Getting to know the crew:
What is your favourite Asana posture?
My favourite posture is Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon pose). I love the balance of strength and opening it requires. It makes me feel likes time has stopped.
What sound do you love?
The best sound in the world is when my dog, Lucy the labradoodle, shakes her head and her ears flop.
When you are not extending, bending and sweating what do you like to do?
When I’m not on my mat I have the privilege to bring new life into the world, or ‘catch babies’ as we call it, in my job as a midwife. I absolutely love my job and find I’m able to use a lot of my yoga teaching to assist women through labour, birth and into the realm of parenthood!
