About Power Yoga
Power Yoga is a concept that draws its roots from the ancient teachings of Hatha Yoga. It resides under the banner of Ha-tha (sun & moon) Yoga and focuses on bringing balance to the body. Its flowing style is followed on from the teachings of a great Indian Yoga Guru T.V. Krishnamacharyia of Mysore India who taught Astanga (8 limbs) Vinyasa (flowing) Yoga (union, to yoke) to great Yoga Masters BKS Iyengar and Patahibhi Jois. Today, Astanga and Iyengar Yoga are amongst the most popular yoga styles practiced in the western world. Power Yoga is inspired by the ancient Yogic teachings, but also gives a common sense approach to teaching its postures to modern day lifestyles. This practical approach takes into consideration that most of us don’t grow up sitting on the floor, typically have tighter hips and commence Yoga practice in adulthood rather than childhood. Therefore, the traditional practice of Yoga and its teachings needs to be blended with exercise physiology so it can be a safe practice for today’s society. Power Yoga also brings an element of psychology and philosophy to the practice that again draws its roots from ancient teachings, namely three texts: the Upanishads, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and the Bhagavad Gita. These are arguably the most important Indian texts relating to the teachings of Yoga. These teachings are also quite detailed and require great commitment to learning how to understand them fully. Accordingly, Power Yoga uses these texts as a basis for weaving these universal principles into the classroom philosophy so they are accessible and easily understood by the general population. Initially, Beryl Bender Birch was the first to use the term ‘Power Yoga’. She had a traditional Yoga background and decided to modernise the teachings to make it more accessible to people. Since then, Baron Baptiste has emerged as one of the most popular teachers, amongst a number of other teachers (Shiva Rea, Duncan Wong, etc.) who have developed modern day styles. Power Yoga has now grown to encompass many different styles and teachings across the world and is the number one Yoga practiced in the United States and rapidly growing in Australasia. Power Yoga is an ultimate experience for people who are ready to tap both their physical and spiritual power. The practice is a combination of different traditions of yoga that combine for a dynamic mix of sweat and spirit. It will tone your body and electrify your mind. It is a flow that has many different levels, allowing beginners, intermediate and advanced students to be challenged in the same class. The classes are taught in a heated room to help cleanse the body and warm the muscles. This flow will torch calories, tone your body, and relax your mind Yoga an ancient practice and we believe its survival and continued relevance is because it can be modified and adapted to society, making it accessible to all. We believe Power Yoga is another step in the evolution of delivering universal teachings of Yoga to more people. "This is a new yoga, a non-dogmatic, progressive yoga," says Baron Baptiste. "Yoga is philosophy in motion, there is no quick fix, no short cut to physical health and fitness, just a process, and in yoga the goal is the process." |
